Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tazul Izan Tajuddin
Dean (Areas of interest: music composition)
Tazul Izan Tajuddin born in Banting Malaysia was a British resident composer. He grew up in Kuala Lumpur, later was in the USA from 1994-1996 and London, UK from 1997-2009. He was Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Harvard University in 2015-2016 invited by Chaya Czernowin. He studied music at Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia and received music scholarship award initiated by Malaysian Prime Minister in 1992-93 to further study in composition. He studied Master's in Music Composition at Carnegie Mellon University, USA and Doctor of Philosophy from University of Sussex, UK. He attended composition courses at Manuel de Falla Festival, Granada, Spain in 1996 and Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique or Insitute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music (IRCAM) in Paris, France in 2001. From 2017 until 2021, Prof Tajuddin is Dean Faculty of Music, was the head of Composition Program (2011-2014) and Associate Professor in Composition at Faculty of Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). He is Vice-President (2010-2011, 2014-currently) and President (2012-2014) for the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers (SMCC) and Associate Secretary (2018-2020),Vice President to Fulbright Alumni Association Malaysia 2020-2022. So far, he has written more than 50 works. His works have been performed and presented in 23 countries and broadcasted in Asia, Europe, Australasia and North America. His works are published online by Alexander Street Press (US/UK),Babelscore (France) and recorded by ATMA Classique (Canada),FMR Records (UK),Ibersonic (Spain),FM Records (UiTM, Malaysia) and Dynamic Publication (Malaysia).

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sharifah Faizah Syed Mohammed
Deputy Dean (Research and Industry Linkages) (Areas of interest: Performance Practice/ Historically Informed Practice, Ethnomusicology and Cultural Studies)
Sharifah Mohammed is Associate Professor of Music at Universiti Teknologi MARA. She received her PhD from Monash University under the supervision of professors Margaret Kartomi and James Chin. As a graduate of City University, UK, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and Bath University, Sharifah majored in piano and composition to obtain a BA (Hons.) Music and an MA in Performance Studies. In 2003 she established the Bachelors in Music Performance course at UiTM. Her research interest includes performance and historically informed practice, often encompassing performativity, identity and nationalism. She believes that understanding music involves a convergence of history, politics, arts, and cultural studies. She premiered a book on the art song of Indonesia or lagu seriosa with Springer (2021) entitled Musical Nationalism in Indonesia. Mohd Yusri bin Hamid
MU110 - Coordinator Diploma in Music
Mohd Yusri Hamid was born in Malacca on April 27, 1983 and currently a music lecturer at Faculty of Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA. He took a Diploma in Music at the UiTM Faculty of Music, and continued his studies there in Bachelor of Music (Composition) under tutelage of Muhammad Shukor Moner, Tazul Tajuddin, Khairil Johari Johar, Aznul Haidi – just to name a few. In 2011 he received a scholarship to further his post graduate studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia majoring in Composition & Malaysian Traditional Music under the tutelage of Dr Razak Abd Aziz and Professor Dr Tan Sooi Beng. He is very enthusiastic with the sound of gong. His music almost always incorporated with the elements of Malaysian traditional music such as the gong cycle, gamelan stratified texture and so on. Most recently, his contemporary gamelan compositions Khabar Angin Tenggara, Badiwira and Jong were being premiered at Dewan Filharmonik Petronas and also were featured during International Gamelan & Caklempong Festival 2015 and 8th UiTM-klpac Malaysian Composers Concert Series 2017.

YM Raja Mohamad Alif Raja Mohamad Adnan

Raja Mohamad Alif is a music composition lecturer and currently head of the composition department at Faculty of Music, University Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia. He has acquired a Master of Music Degree from Royal Holloway, University of London, focusing on music composition under the tutelage of Dr. Ed Bennett and Dr. Christopher Mayo. Prior to that he studied at UiTM, graduating with a Vice Chancellors Award for his bachelor’s degree in music composition where he studied under the guidance of Dr. Ross James Carey. Throughout his career as an educator and composer, several of his compositions were performed by various international performers including performers from Japan, Spain, Vietnam, Russia, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Malaysia. The compositional works by composers such as Giacinto Scelsi, Morton Feldman, Panayiotis Kokoras, Francois Bayle and Dr. Tazul Izan Tajuddin are among the few which has been a great influence towards his composition development and style. His compositions have always been driven by extra-musical elements, are often based on Malaysian historical subjects, uses unconventional musical notations, graphic scores and focuses on timbre to paint his sound world

Dr. Yeoh Pei Ann

Pei Ann Yeoh is a violinist from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She has received degrees from Queensland Conservatorium, Australia; and Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, United Kingdom. She has worked and played with renowned musicians such as Dave Holland, Chris Potter, James Morrison, Mark Feldman, Frederic Rzewski. Between 2016-2018, she was a regular member of the London Improviser’s Orchestra, followed by a brief residency with the Australian Art Orchestra in 2019. She received her doctorate degree from King’s College London in 2019 for her thesis titled ‘Jazz Violin: Myths, Identities, and The Creative Process’. She is currently a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM).

Dr. Phang Kong Chien
Coordinator Postgraduate
Phang Kong-Chien (PhD), tenor, is currently a senior lecturer and head of postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Music, Universiti Teknologi MARA, holding a PhD in Musicology from UPM; Master of Music in Voice Performance from Rutgers University; and Bachelor of Science in Music and International Business from New Jersey City University. Phang as well has attended Postgraduate courses from NTU (NIE) Singapore. Phang has performed as a soloist in the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas, Opera at Florham, Dicapo Opera, Opera at Rutgers, Victoria Concert Hall, Zimmerli Art Museum, Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Center (KLPac) and the Yongan City Hall in works of the Messiah, the Creation, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and has been casted Albazar in Il Turco in Italian, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, The First Armed Man in The Magic Flute, Gobin in La Rondine and in operatic scenes in Marta, Gilbert and Sullivan at the Opera and Amadeus-Mostly Mozart. Phang has released two solo albums under record labels of Sony Music and Goodstyle Enterprise. Recent recording projects include Malay Folksongs from Malaysia for Voice and Piano (2018), Selected Art Songs by Malaysian Chinese Composers (2020) and Kabus-Kabus Memori II (2021). In the field of research, Phang has investigated the habitus of bel canto singing tradition among the urban Malaysian Chinese communities and presented and published academic papers related to the topic. Phang has read research findings in Singapore, Austria, the Philippines, Taiwan and Malaysia at music conferences organized by ISME (International Society of Music Education), ASPMER (Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research), ICTM (International Council of Traditional Music), the International Institute of Knowledge Management (ICOAH) and YSTC (Yong Siew Toh Conservatory) at tertiary institutions such as the National University of Singapore, University of Graz, Philippine Women's University, Taipei Municipal University of Education, UPM, UiTM, UMS and UPSI.

Dr Valerie Ross, PhD, MEd, BMus (Hons), DRSAMD, is an accomplished composer, researcher and music educator. Her works have been performed in major cities in Europe and the Asia-Pacific. She has received awards and fellowships from the Rockefeller Foundation; Japan Foundation; Commonwealth Foundation; Darmstadt International Institute for New Music, Germany and Institute of Musical Research, University of London. Professor Ross is also Chair of the Centre for Intercultural Musicology at Churchill College, University of Cambridge and a visiting professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, Beijing. She served as a member of the Board of Accreditation, Malaysian Qualifications Agency and she is an experienced research grant evaluator. Valerie’s specialization is in curriculum evaluation, composition, intercultural musicology and interdisciplinary practice-based research collaborating with experts in the fields of medicine and health sciences at UiTM. Dr. Chai Tse Wei
Senior Lecturer
A native of Seremban, Malaysia, Dr. Chai received her Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and Master of Music (M.M. ) degrees in Piano Performance from West Virginia University, U.S.A. in 2016 and 2011 respectively. Dr. Chai is a Senior Lecturer and the Director of Piano at Univiersity Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Shah Alam since February 2020. Prior to this, she taught Performance Practice, Solo and Chamber Music at her alma mater, University Putra Malaysia in 2019. Dr. Chai also worked as the piano lecturer at Waynesburg University, staff accompanist at Eastern Kentucky University, choir and church organist at First Presbyterian Church in Morgantow, WV. Dr. Chai made her concerto debut with UPM Symphony Orchestra in 2007 by performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor . She was a recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, including the Honorable Mention in the Classical Piano Solo Category in “WVU Intersection of Jazz and Classical Piano Festival and Competition” (2016), the winner of WVU Young Artist Concerto Competition (2015), a proud recipient of the Valerie Canady Foundation and Dr. and Mrs. William J. Canady Award Music Scholarship (2015), and Yamaha Music International Asia Region Scholarship (2005).

Dr. Nur Izzati Jamalludin
Senior Lecturer
Nur Izzati completed her PhD at King’s College London in June 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Katherine Schofield and Professor Martin Stokes. Prior to her doctorate studies, she was a researcher at the Department of Museums Malaysia where she and worked alongside Professor Tan Sooi Beng and Professor Patricia Matusky for the development of Malaysia’s Music Museum. Her general research interest lies in music and traditions in the northern states of Peninsular Malaysia looking at the cultural exchange it had with its neighbouring states and territories, historical narrative, its use as a form of cultural diplomacy at colonial exhibition, gender performativity, aesthetics, current appreciation and representation, and the supernatural. Izzati had conducted extensive research on Mek Mulung, a dance drama in the northern Peninsular Malaysia looking at the development of the performance through archival resources and its evolution of the performance in the rural and urban stages. Izzati has been invited to conduct a workshop on the Mek Mulung and has presented her research in several International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) conferences throughout 20142018. She is a member of ICTM and the Australian Society for Performing Arts Healthcare.

Dr. Bernard Tan Yong Boon
Senior Lecturer (Areas of interest: Collaborative Piano, Lyric Diction, Vocal Literature, Opera, Classical Piano)
Dr Bernard Tan is an award-winning pianist, vocal coach and music educator. He graduated from University of Michigan (USA) with a Doctor of Musical Arts mentored by the world- renowned Martin Katz; and graduated from Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (UK) with a Master of Music with Distinction, under the tutelage of Robin Bowman. Dr Tan has won numerous prizes, awards, and fellowships for his work as a pianist, including John Ireland Accompanist Prize, second prize in Delia Hall Accompanist Prize, Denis Matthew Memorial Trust, Hester Dickson Full Scholarship Award, and several others. His work in opera has seen him appointed as a repetiteur and coach in productions in Italy, Canada, USA, UK and Malaysia. He was a vocal piano fellow in the prestigious Music Academy of the West and a coaching fellow in both Opera on the Avalon (Canada) and International Lyric Academy (Italy). Praised for having "an admirable physiological setup" by British pianist Robin Bowman, Dr Tan is known in his piano teaching to emphasise on technique as a foundation for expression. His constant work with pianists and singers alike has led him to be described as a "knowledgeable and enthusiastic coach" by soprano Dr Rose Mannino. Dr Tan was regarded as "an excellent Italian language and music coach" by Matteo Dalle Fratte, who also appointed him as a regular coach in Veneto Opera Summer School organised by Melofonetica.

Dr. Md Jais Bin Ismail
Senior Lecturer
Md Jais Ismail (PhD) joined the department as Senior Lecturer in Music Education in 2020, having previously been teaching music in preschool, primary school, and secondary school for twelve years. He read Music as an undergraduate at Malaysian Teachers Training College (Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Ilmu Khas) in Bachelor of Teaching (Music Education), then completed a Master of Education and a PhD (Music) at Universiti Putra Malaysia. He also has experience teaching music to gifted students in Pusat GENIUS@pintar Negara, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. His research articles have been published in indexed journal such as Malaysian Journal of Learning and Instruction, International Journal of Innovation, Creativity and Change, and Quantum Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities. He has also presented his music research in many conferences such as Malaysian Music Education Conference (MusEd’21), International Conference On Social Sciences And Technology For Postgraduates And Researchers (ICSSTPR2021), The 12th Upm International Colloquium For Music Research (ICMUS’19), and Simposium Kesarjanaan Pengajaran Dan Pembelajaran Dan Penilaian Alternatif UKM (SOTLA).

Khatriza Ahmad Saffian
Senior Lecturer
Khatriza completed her Master’s of Music Technology from New York University in 2009. As an alumnus, she also holds a Bachelor of Music Performance (Hons.) as well as Diploma in Music from Universiti Teknologi MARA. Her research interest includes music technology, Malay gamelan, teaching and learning of aural skills, and Malaysian independent music. Apart from research and teaching, she is active in community and performance projects with Fakulti Muzik UiTM. Khatriza was appointed as Head of Quality for the faculty for four years (2014-2018) and has since been involved as external reviewers and examiners for UiTM and other universities for quality assurance. She is currently pursuing her PhD at Universiti Putra Malaysia in Human-Computer Interaction, with a research focus on Music Interaction.

Ainolnaim Azizol
Lecturer (Areas of interest: Music composition, electroacoustic composition)
Ainolnaim Azizol has been a full-time academic staff at the Faculty of Music Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia since 2014. He teaches music degree students on fundamentals of music composition, music theory II, music theory III, counterpoint and tonal structure, electronic music, digital audio recording, music technology, music production and seminar in composition I-II. He had collaborated with various professionals and institutions from different fields for academic research funding and industrial project development such as the Brigstow Institute UK, Bristol Interaction Group (BIG), Bristol Open Doors Festival, The Japan Foundation Kuala Lumpur, Goethe Institut Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), Roland Asia Pacific (Malaysia), Yamaha Music Malaysia and R&D Studio including renowned music ensembles such as Ensemble Mosaik, Asasello Quartet, and Kayafatilah Gamelan Ensemble, just to list a few. Since 2016, Ainol has published academic papers in indexed journals and conferences namely the Malaysian Journal of Music (previously known as Malaysian Music Journal), International Music and Performing Arts Conference (IMPAC) 2016 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris Malaysia and Electroacoustic Music Studies (EMS) Network Conference 2021, De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. Ainol has written a range of compositions and most of his works consist of both local and non-local traditional elements in contemporary-style music for media and non-media works. He had participated in the International Music Institute Darmstadt Summer Course 2012 where he had world premiere his piece C-lat in Cage+ Project and lessons with Brian Ferneyhough, Claus-Steffen Mahnkopf, Georges Arpeghis and Hildegard Westerkamp. He was further recognized as a composer when some of his music has gained several places in music composition competitions such as 2nd Prize Asian Composers League (ACL) Young Composer Award in Yokohama Japan 2014 and 3rd Prize Flauto Dolce Composition Competition 2016, Lausanne, Switzerland. Since 2012, his works have been premiered in Germany, UK, Switzerland, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and the US for international festivals such as New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF) 2021, Linux Audio Conference Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) Standford University, MA/IN MATERAMEDIA Festival 2019 Italy, Acht Brücken Music Festival 2012 composition competition finalist WDR3, Cologne, Germany and more. Currently, he is a PhD candidate at the University of Bristol funded by the Graduate Excellence Program (GrEP) MARA 2019 scholarship for four years doctoral studies in electroacoustic soundscape composition supervised by Prof. Neal Farwell and Prof. Michael Ellison and had attended academic and creative-technical courses held by Prof. Emeritus Barry Truax, Natasha Barrett, Locus Sonus and more.

Ahmad Munir Mahzair

Ahmad Munir Mahzair was born in Kuala Lumpur and moved to Alor Star, Kedah where he got his education and music studies. He is currently a violin lecturer and the Director of Instrumental Studies at the UiTM Faculty of Music. He is also the advisor for the String Ensemble Society (SES). He began his musical journey when he joined the Sultan Abdul Hamid College Marching Band as a trumpet player. A well-qualified musician, Munir holds a Diploma in Music and a Bachelor in Music Performance from Universiti Teknologi MARA where he studied violin with Radzali Mustaffa and Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi. Throughout his studies, he participated actively with the UiTM Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Symphony Orchestra and also lead the chamber group for the 1st Malaysian Composers Concert Series under the baton of Dr. Tazul Izan Tajuddin. He then was awarded the Young Lecturer Scholarship from UiTM and Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia where he pursued his Master of Music Performance in USA under several renowned violin Professors such as Stephen Miahky, Solomiya Ivakhiv and Dawn Wohn. Munir also has done several masterclasses and tutoring such as Southeast Asia Music Education Exchange (Seamex) at Yogyakarta and Tentera Udara Di-Raja Malaysia (TUDM) Strings Workshop just to name a few. He also has actively performed both locally and internationally under various renowned conductors including Datuk Mustafa Fuzer Nawi, Dato’ Johari Salleh, Datuk Mokhzani Ismail, Datuk Ramli M.S. as well as recorded with renowned local artists such as Yuna, Aizat Hamdan, Syamel and many more.

Khairunissa Diyana Md Noor

Khairunnisa Diyana Md Noor earned her Master of Music Studies from the Conservatorium of Music, University of Tasmania, Australia, in 2010 and a Bachelor’s in Music Performance from UiTM in 2007. While in Australia, she was the recipient of the Jessie WakefieldLuckman Prize for voice and finalist in several competitions such as the Lieder Recital, DJ Mazda Operatic Aria, and the City of Hobart Eisteddfod. As a performer, Khairunnisa has appeared in live telecast radio performances for 3 MBS radio stations in Melbourne, Australia, as well as in various solo recital and chamber concerts locally such as Music at ILHAM, Embassy of Italy & Embassy of Netherlands Cocktail and Dinner Reception, Urbanscapes 2019, Opera Puteri Saadong (the first Malay Opera) and many more. In 2017, she made her first performance in London for the British Malaysia Society 60th Anniversary of the Malaysian Independence Concert. She was the recipient of the Lestari Grant under UiTM with an interest in Indie Music in Malaysia and the Cendana Grant Independent Music Fund Program. Khairunnisa has also given lectures and workshops at various higher learning institutions, government and private sector, including MyIPO and Petrosains. Khairunnisa is an active jury in Malaysia and has been repeatedly invited to adjudicate solo singing and choral competitions at regional, state, and national levels. She has been involved with the production of the album Malay Folksongs and Kabus Memori (compilation of songs by Tazul Tajuddin). She is currently working on her solo album ‘Merdu Puisi’, which consists of Malaysian Art Songs. She is a lecturer at the Diploma Music Department Faculty of Music UiTM, Shah Alam.

Rayner Naili

Rayner Naili is a Sabahan born contemporary composer and educator. His early exposure in music is when he started learning music as self-taught, and then he decided to get a proper music education in the Faculty of Music of Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) from 2008 until 2013 where he achieved a dean list for his bachelor music in composition. He then continued to further his study in MusM Composition in University of Manchester, UK, where he studied composition with Richard Whalley. Rayner’s works have been performed and workshopped with many professional musicians such as Quartor Danel, Trio Atem, Clare Hammond etc during his study in the UK. In 2018, Rayner’s work was selected to compete in the Young Composers Competition in ACL Taiwan. In 2019, Rayner’s work written for four bongos were world premiered during Bandung International Art Festival 2019 (BIAF 2019) in Bandung, Indonesia. In the same year, Rayner collaborated with traditional dancer Agung Gunawan from Indonesia performing Humanity written for violin, viola, erhu, guzheng and a bongo during SoundBridge Festival 2019 that was held in Taylor University, Malaysia. In the following year, the reorchestration of Humanity was performed during an ACL Korea concert themed ‘Wave From Korea’ held in Seoul, Korea in 2020. During the Covid-19 restrictions in 2021, Rayner’s new work for string sextet was performed by Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) virtually via their own YouTube channel. This virtual concert was a collaboration between the Malaysian Composer Collective (MCC) and MPO featuring several local composers including Rayner himself. Currently, Rayner is teaching in the Faculty of Music UiTM primarily focuses on music theory, music composition and music arranging.

Maryann Magdalina Linnis

Maryann Magdalena Linnis completed her Diploma , Degree and Masters all at the Faculty of Music , UiTM. As an choral enthusiast, she decided to involved herself to many more International choral events individually and selected as Concert Mistress in the UiTM Chamber Choir directed by Associate Prof. Dr Masashi Kishimoto which after that they won Gold Medal in many competition such as 4th Bali International Choral Competition, 30th Praga Cantat International Choral Competition, 2nd Kalamata International Choir Competition, Greece (Grand Prix winner) , 9th Rome International Choir Competition, Italy and many more. In 2017, she was appointed as chairperson for the choral workshop in collaborating with the University of Athens. Since then, she actively did her choral workshop in University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) , invited by the Patron director Datuk Yoe Boon Hai to do Vocal workshop at the Youth Prep Centre, Alamesra Kota Kinabalu Sabah organized by Misoginavoice Choir group, invited to do Choral Training by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) choir committee and now she is appointed as the UiTM Chamber Choir assistant conductor. In order to develop his choral conducting skills, she joined the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Costa Rica, International-Intensive Conducting Seminar 2021 with a Certificate of Achievement. She is now in the UiTM Faculty of Music , Music Education Department and as an active member in the Malaysian Association for Music Education (MAME). She will present her spoken paper , “Roles and Responsibilities of Choral Conductors in Malaysia” in the coming Malaysian Music Education Conference (MusED’21).
