FOR STRING QUARTET


“UiTM LATIN AMERICAN STRING QUARTET”
QUARTET IN RESIDENCE OF THE EMBASSY OF COLOMBIA IN MALAYSIA

INTRODUCTION

In November 2021, the UiTM Faculty of Music will be holding its annual “Malaysian Composer Series,” a week of concerts dedicated to to Contemporary Music, Malaysian works and featuring local and international performers.

During this week, the UiTM Latin American Music String Quartet will be holding a concert on November 24th, dedicated solely to new works. Because of this initiative, we are announcing an international call for works, in order to select 4 compositions that will be selected, awarded, and performed that evening.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • The composition should be for a standard string quartet (2 violins, viola, and cello) with no extra instrument or electronic sounds.
  • Nationals of any country can participate.
  • No minimum or maximum age restrictions.
  • Each composer can only submit one score.
  • Scores must be original, not performed or published before, and composed solely for this event.
  • The composer will allow UiTM university to use this work for future publications, both digitally and in print.
  • The winning composers will keep the rights to their works, but they must state in future publications that the piece was part of this event.
  • The piece should not be shorter than 5 minutes or longer than 12 minutes.

REGISTRATION FEE

The registration fee is MYR40 (About USD10). This amount must be paid via UiTM Pay.

APPLICATION

Applicants should send a submission no later than September 15th, 2021. Submissions after this date won't be accepted.

The following documents must be attached:

  • A copy of your national identification card or passport
  • Applicants short concert bio
  • A recent high resolution picture
  • Receipt of the MYR40 registration fee
  • A full score of the composition in PDF, prepared in a standard musical software (Finale, Sibelius, etc)
  • Please be aware that the composition should NOT have the composer’s name at any point. Full scores that have the real name of the composer will be automatically disqualified.

COMPETITION SCHEDULE

  • September 15th, 2021: Deadline for full submission of the scores and other required documents
  • September 15th until October 10th, 2021: Judges deliberation. No composers will be contacted during this time.
  • October 10th, 2021: Announcement of the winning compositions
  • October 15th, 2021: Deadline for the awarded composers to submit individual parts
  • November 24th, 2021: Performance Gala of the awarded pieces

PRIZES

  • First Place: MYR3,000. The work will be performed at the gala concert on November 24th, 2021 during the Malaysian Composer Series. Future digital and print publication of the work.
  • Second Place: MYR2,000. The work will be performed at the gala concert on November 24th, 2021 during the Malaysian Composer Series. Future digital and print publication of the work.
  • Third Place: MYR1,000. The work will be performed at the gala concert on November 24th, 2021 during the Malaysian Composer Series. Future digital and print publication of the work.
  • Fourth Place: Honorary mention. The work will be performed at the gala concert on November 24th, 2021 during the Malaysian Composer Series. Future digital and print publication of the work.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES AND REGULATIONS

Application for the Competition implies the applicants’ unconditional compliance with all the rules and regulations established by this announcement.

The organization reserves the right to cancel the Competition if causes beyond their control should arise.

In case of disputes and/or misunderstandings, the prevailing language is English.
